As leaders and managers field today's ever-changing economy, it's more important than ever to develop their skills (including intrapersonal skills) and those of their team. But what skills make someone successful at work?
Is it their technical know-how, or what kind of degree or certification they received? Is it how they manage their relationships with others, whether colleagues, employees, or customers? Both can be true.
What about their relationship with themselves, those with a clear sense of self and a strong understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses? These individuals exude confidence, focus, and resilience. I'd say these factors contribute to success, too.
That clear "sense of self" is also known as your intrapersonal skill set — your ability to self-manage and self-regulate.
Intrapersonal means "within the self," but these life skills still affect how you interact and collaborate effectively. For that reason, cultivating strong intrapersonal skills can help shape teams and determine success at work.
First, let’s start by defining intrapersonal skills.
Intrapersonal skills are the skills, behaviors, and habits that help you face challenges, cope with change, learn new things, and regulate your emotions. Intrapersonal skills represent your relationship with yourself and the world around you.
They often reflect your dialogue with your inner self and dictate how you move through life, including your mental health and physical health.
Psychologists have studied self-regulation since the 1960s, and varying definitions have been born from research:

Self-awareness is the ability to be mindful and conscious of your actions and reactions and how they affect others.
