Beginning Friday as the Memorial Day holiday weekend opens, San Diego sheriff’s deputies will be out in force as increased patrols look for impaired drivers.

“If you are caught driving impaired, you will go to jail,” the department said in a news release of the increased enforcement, which is to continue through Monday.

This weekend, deputies also will be looking for drivers and passengers who are not wearing a seat belt.  This includes vehicles where children are not secured in child safety seats.

Through June 2, law enforcement agencies across the nation will be taking part in the “Click It or Ticket” seat belt campaign.  California has a primary seat belt law, which allows law enforcement officers to ticket someone for not wearing a belt without first committing another traffic violation.

Funding for the impaired driving/seat belt patrols is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) thanks to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
