The Rincon Tribal Council this week celebrated the new and expanded Rincon Market with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The new Rincon Market, officials said in a news release, promises to preserve the convenience of its predecessor while offering new produce and meat departments.
It is 4,160 square feet, providing a larger space for what they called a “modern shopping
experience.”
The added capacity is especially important for the reservation, as the closest supermarket is 13 miles away.
“We are all very excited to be opening the doors of our new market,” said Chairman Bo Mazzetti. “We are proud to invest in our community, which supports our commitment to enhance the lives of our tribal members and our neighboring communities. This expansion symbolizes positive growth today and for our future.”
The expanded market replaces the historic Rincon Market, known locally as “Sam’s Market.”
Established in 1977, the old Rincon Market has been a “foundational location” for both the Rincon and Valley Center communities.
Officials said it “served tribal members and residents for decades and has been a familiar and appreciated location for people’s everyday shopping needs.”
The Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians is a sovereign government, recognized by the U.S, that owns Harrah’s Resort Southern California. The tribe uses profits from the casino and other enterprises to provide governmental services including tribal security, environmental enforcement, economic development, healthcare, culture programs and a tribal court.
