A fire of unknown origin spread through a University City condominium complex at daybreak Wednesday, displacing seven people and causing an estimated $500,000 worth of damage, authorities reported.

The non-injury blaze in the 7900 block of Playmor Terrace erupted at about 6:15 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

The flames spread through the walls and attic of the structure, damaging two residences, according to SDFRD public affairs. It took firefighters about an hour to fully subdue the blaze, the city agency reported.

The American Red Cross was called in to help the displaced residents — four adults and three children — arrange for interim housing.

The monetary losses were set at $300,000 to the building and $200,000 to contents. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
