The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search of the ocean near San Clemente Island for a downed plane with three people aboard, authorities announced Thursday.

Officials said they searched 334 square miles and found no signs of any survivors after the Phoenix Air Learjet went missing Wednesday morning about a mile southwest of San Clemente Island.

“Suspending search efforts is one of the hardest decisions to be made, but after aggressively searching the area around San Clemente Island for more than 24 hours using land, air and surface assets with negative results, the decision was made to suspend the active search until further information or developments occur,” said Capt. Jim Spitler, commander, U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing passengers.”

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard’s Joint Harbor Operations Center in San Diego received the initial report of a downed aircraft, at 7:53 a.m. Wednesday from Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility San Diego, reporting an aircraft emergency aboard a Phoenix Air Learjet with three people on board, the Coast Guard reported.

“FACSFAC reported that the aircraft didn’t make it back to the San Clemente Island runway,” the Coast Guard said in a statement. “The Phoenix Air Learjet was reportedly contracted by the U.S. Navy and took off from Point Mugu Naval Air Station.”

According to the Coast Guard, another Phoenix Air Learjet was in the area and immediately began searching for possible survivors, and a debris field was found one mile southwest of San Clemente Island.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations aircraft and the USS San Diego diverted after hearing the emergency broadcast and began searching the area as well, the Coast Guard reported.

Also, an MH-60 Jayhawk aircrew from Coast Guard Sector San Diego and the crew aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Robert Ward, a 154-foot Fast Response Cutter homeported in Los Angeles/Long Beach, were launched and led the search.

Additionally, a U.S. Air Force C-130, multiple U.S. Air Force land and surface assets from 68th Rescue Squadron, and a U.S. Navy MH-60 Romeo helicopter from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron were launched and assisted in the search.

The area near San Clemente Island where the aircraft was reported down is managed by the Navy and located about 80 miles west of San Diego.

The Coast Guard continued a search early Thursday for three people whose plane went down about one mile southwest of San Clemente Island off the coast of San Diego.

Officials were notified shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday by the air traffic control tower on the island regarding a possible plane down, and a debris field was subsequently located, Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Levi Read told City News Service.

“We have our Coast Guard Cutter Robert Ward searching the area and they will be searching throughout the night and the early morning,” Read said later Wednesday night.

A crew from Air Station San Diego was also searching aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter.

The debris field was found in the ocean about a mile southwest of the island, which is a Navy training area located about 80 miles west of San Diego.

The search also involves personnel from the Navy and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Read said.

A young woman and man suffered fatal gunshot wounds Friday in an apparent murder-suicide evidently carried out by the latter in his Nestor-area apartment.

After gunfire sounded inside the rental residence in the 2300 block of Grove Avenue, a relative of the 20-year-old man who lived there entered and found the bodies of the pair about 11 a.m., according to the San Diego Police Department.

“Based on the initial observations of the officers at the scene, it appears the most likely scenario is that the (man) shot the (woman), and then shot himself,” SDPD Lt. Jud Campbell said.

The man’s name has been withheld pending family notification. The woman, who is believed to have been in her late teens, remained unidentified in late Friday afternoon.

“Detectives are working … to gather evidence and interview witnesses,” the lieutenant said. “There (are no suspects) outstanding, as no one else appears to have been involved in this incident.”

Two people were killed Saturday when their vehicle crashed into a light pole and caught fire on state Route 76, police said.

Police responded to calls of the crash of a Dodge SUV at 2:13 a.m. Saturday on SR-76 and Airport Road, according to Sgt. Rick Davis of the Oceanside Police Department. Officers arrived to find the SUV fully engulfed in flames.

Oceanside Fire Department crews responded to extinguish the fire and found two occupants in the vehicle dead.

There were no witnesses to the crash and the cause was under investigation by the OPD’s major accident investigation team, the sergeant said. The names of the dead were being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Anyone with information regarding the crash was asked to call Accident Investigator Kevin Lissner at 760-435-4431.

The crash was similar to another fatal accident a day earlier, when two people were killed when a vehicle crashed off an Oceanside street, hit a fire hydrant and overturned at about 5 p.m. Friday.

That crash took place at Avenida Empresa and College Boulevard, about a mile and a half south of SR-76, according to the OPD.

The victims, whose names were not immediately available, died at the scene, OPD spokeswoman Jennifer Atenza said.
