Firefighters battled a large, smoky early-morning mulch fire at a plant nursery on New Year’s Day.

A report came in to San Diego Fire Rescue Department at 1:23 a.m. Monday of a vegetation fire at Terra Bella Nursery at 302 Hollister St., east of Interstate 5 and north of Palm Avenue, with firefighting units arriving at 1:25 a.m.

When crews arrived on scene, the fire that began in mulch had spread to a nearby pile of pallets, according to Fox 5 San Diego.

“We have crews from San Diego Fire Department, Chula Vista and Imperial Beach that have been here for several hours fighting this fire,” SDFD Battalion Chief Tommy Charpentier told Fox 5. “With the sun coming up, we were just able to get some heavy equipment operators from the nursery to start pulling back the pile of wood and mulch, allowing us better access to try to extinguish the fire.”

As of 7:45 a.m., SDFD reported the nursery fire had weakened, adding crews were remaining at the scene to completely extinguish the blaze and mop up afterward.

No firefighter or civilian injuries or deaths were reported.

The origin and cause of the blaze were being investigated.

A total of seven engines, one truck, one helicopter, two battalion chiefs and 43 personnel responded to the nursery fire, according to SDFD.

Crews were reportedly still on the scene by dawn.

There were no reports of injuries or evacuations.

No other information was immediately available.

A small vegetation fire ignited by an open cooking flame in Oceanside sent one man to a hospital with minor injuries, authorities confirmed Tuesday.

Around 4 p.m. Monday, thick smoke was spotted between San Juan Capistrano and the San Luis Rey River, according to the Oceanside Fire Department.

The affected area is known to have multiple transient camps, according to the OFD.

The victim, an occupant of the camp, suffered minor first-degree burns while trying to put the flames out with a blanket and was taken to a hospital after police questioning, the OFD reported.

“Prior to transporting the patient to the hospital, the Oceanside Police Department interviewed the patient and learned that the fire had started due to an open cooking fire,” according to the OFD. “Initial reports indicated that the fire was human caused but was non-malicious.”

Firefighters worked to extinguish flames within 25 minutes of arrival and keep it contained to less than 1/4 acre, according to the OFD.

An investigation was continuing.

The discovery of a body at the site of a suspicious predawn brush fire in Mission Bay Park prompted a homicide investigation Thursday.

Firefighters found the burned body, believed to be that of a young woman or teenage girl, at about 3 a.m while extinguishing the hillside blaze near a parking lot north of Friars Road and west of Napa Street, according to the San Diego Police Department.

In light of the suspicious nature of the fire and the possibly related fatality, homicide detectives and the San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team will investigate.

“Due to the extensive damage from the fire, information about the (decedent’s) identity or any possible injuries is very limited,” Lt. Steve Shebloski said in the mid-afternoon. “It is still very early in the investigation, and little is known about the cause of the fire and the circumstances leading up to the … death.”

Crews on Sunday stopped the spread of a two-acre vegetation blaze near Otay Mountain Truck Trail, a mile north of the U.S.-Mexico border, Cal Fire officials said.

The blaze started in the afternoon as a hiker attempted a signal fire to seek medical aid.

The fire was first reported around 2:30 p.m. Sunday at one acre and slowly spreading. By 4:20 p.m., air units dropped retardant all around the flames to stop the forward progress, said Capt. Thomas Shoots of Cal Fire San Diego.

The hiker, who was experiencing dehydration, admitted that the signal fire got out of hand, an incident commander at the scene told Shoots. Crews found the hiker near the fire and a helicopter making water drops transitioned to perform the hoist rescue and transport him to a hospital.

Firefighters will remain at the scene for about two hours for mop-op, Shoots said.
