Three men suffered injuries Thursday morning, one serious, in a collision on a rural road in Wynola.

The crash occurred about 8:15 a.m.

A westbound 1995 Chevrolet pickup veered to the left across a set of double yellow lines west of Springview Road for unknown reasons and sideswiped an oncoming 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, according the California Highway Patrol.

The impact sent the SUV careening off the south side of the roadway where it went down an embankment and crashed into a tree. The truck spun out on the asphalt, coming to rest in the eastbound lane.

Paramedics airlifted the driver of the pickup, a Julian resident, 71, to Palomar Medical Center for treatment of major head trauma and evaluation of complaints of pain in his chest and legs.

An ambulance crew treated a Temecula man, 63, who had been driving the SUV and his passenger, a Carlsbad resident, 62, at the scene for minor injuries.

All three men were properly restrained at the time of the accident. Neither driver was believed to have been intoxicated, according to the CHP

Police arrested a man suspected of multiple crimes – including an attack on a police officer and two truck thefts – Saturday after a pursuit that caused at least three wrecks.

The situation began Friday afternoon when a witness notified Chula Vista police that a man had smashed the window of a car in Walmart’s parking lot in the 1100 block of Broadway.

An officer arrived and recognized the man as a known criminal, according to OnScene.TV.

The suspect allegedly attacked the officer, hitting him in the face with a heavy wrench and knocking him down.

The officer was treated and released at a local hospital, but the suspect fled.

About 12 hours later, at 2 a.m. Saturday, National City police spotted the suspect in a stolen Dodge Ram truck, and gave chase, OnScene.TV reported.

The suspect led them through the city and onto southbound Interstate 805, where their speeds reached over 100 mph. When the suspect exited at H Street in Chula Vista, he made a U-turn, heading the wrong direction on the ramp, where he hit a National City patrol vehicle.

The officer was uninjured and the chase continued, as the suspect proceeded northbound in the southbound lanes at high speed. At E Street, the suspect’s vehicle collided with a Toyota SUV driven by a freelance journalist who suffered a broken arm.

The suspect, according to OnScene.TV, though injured, fled on foot. At 3 a.m., National City police spotted him again, this time in a different stolen truck, and chased him onto the eastbound lanes of state Route 94.

During the pursuit, the suspect turned around, to travel west on the eastbound side, where he caused another accident.

Police eventually caught up with him near Mount Hope Cemetery, where he was treated for an injured leg. OnScene.TV reported that he faces several felony charges.

A motorist was seriously injured Wednesday when concrete debris from a damaged center-divider wall smashed through his windshield on Interstate 8 near Grossmont High School.

Part of the barrier was broken apart in the area of Severin Drive in La Mesa by an out-of-control eastbound Ford F-350 truck that plowed into it shortly after noon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Chunks of the wall landed on the other side of the freeway and hurtled into the front of a westbound Infiniti G37 coupe, shattering its windshield and severely injuring the 24-year-old El Cajon man behind the wheel.

Medics took him to Sharp Memorial Hospital along with the driver of the truck, whose condition was not released.

The wreck forced closures of two lanes on each side of the interstate into the mid-afternoon. The freeway was fully open again in the area by about 4 p.m.

Authorities believe the driver of the pickup, 64-year-old Lakeside man who was towing a car on a trailer, may have suffered a medical emergency just prior to the accident, since a witness described seeing him slumped over the steering wheel before the truck hit the wall, CHP public affairs Officer Kevin Pearlstein said.
