A 68-year-old pedestrian was hospitalized with life- threatening injuries after he was hit by a Dodge Neon while crossing the street in the Clairemont Mesa East neighborhood of San Diego, authorities said Saturday.

San Diego Police officers were called at 11:28 p.m. Friday to the 6800 block of  Balboa Avenue where they learned the man was on the north curb of Balboa and was crossing the street heading south when the 2005 Dodge, heading west and driven by a 21-year old man, struck him, Officer Robert Heims said.

The pedestrian sustained multiple fractures and lacerations to the face and was taken to a hospital.

The department’s Traffic Division is investigating the collision and anyone with information related to it was asked to call 858-495-7800 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
