The family whose two children were killed Sunday after they got out of their stopped car on state Route 78 have set up a GoFundMe account and plan a Saturday morning fundraiser.

Amy Aguilar, 16, and Alan Aguilar, 10, died on the freeway in Vista. They had left the car to retrieve luggage that fell off.

Their mother. Sandra Ortiz, 33, was taken into custody at the scene, accused of driving under the influence, manslaughter and child endangerment.

Their father, Miguel Aguilar, was not in the car at the time, but quickly arrived at the scene, where he could only watch as paramedics sought to save his son and daughter.

He said his wife was not a bad person, and had told her children not to get out of the car.

The family was homeless and living in the SUV. Now Aguilar and his four other children are seeking to stay with friends and relatives. He said he is “lost and don’t know what to do.”

The fundraiser on Saturday will begin at 8 a.m. at Sunset Park, located at 909 Puesta Del Sol in San Marcos.
