The Oceanside Public Library is a proud recipient of a Cal Humanities and California Reads Grant entitled War Comes Home. Starting Oct. 3, with the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Oceanside, the Oceanside Public Library will be hosting a six-week long series of programs and events that center on the common theme of the veteran experience, aiming to increase public understanding for those who have served as well as spark public conversation and empathy toward the veteran experience.
Our War Comes Home programs and events, ranging from local author talks to experimental arts workshops and a family-friendly street fair, utilize information taken from the book What it is Like to Go to War by Karl Marlantes. This text was chosen by the California Center for the Book as the book that best represents the experience of war and the San Francisco Chronical said it “ought to be mandatory reading by potential infantry recruits and by residents of any nation that sends its kids-Marlantes’s word-into combat.”
The Oceanside Public Library will host multiple book clubs throughout the city, discussing the text and how a dozen years of war has affected our unique Oceanside Community. Programs will focus not only on the Veterans themselves, but also will also aim to help people understand and to listen to the Veteran Experience.
California Reads provides a springboard to think about and discuss ideas using thought-provoking books about issues that are of importance to our state. California Reads invites Californians from all walks of life throughout our state to participate in reading and discussion programs and related activities hosted by libraries, schools, colleges, bookstores and other community institutions.
