A predawn shooting in City Heights left one man dead Tuesday and another behind bars on suspicion of murder.
The homicide in the 4000 block of 36th Street was reported shortly before 2:30 a.m., according to the San Diego Police Department.
“The preliminary investigation showed the victim was standing in the apartment complex courtyard when the (assailant) approached on foot from the alley and shot the victim in what appears to be an unprovoked attack,” Campbell said. “The (shooter) then ran back toward the alley and fled on foot.”
Investigators soon identified the suspected killer as 32-year-old Edgar Sanchez, a relative of a resident of the apartment complex where the homicide took place.
“While detectives were still at the scene investigating at around 9 a.m., they spotted Sanchez walking in the area,” the lieutenant said. “Sanchez was taken into custody, and a firearm was found in his possession.”
Police released no suspected motive for the fatal gunfire.
Sanchez was being held at San Diego Central Jail without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
