The National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory, set to remain in effect until 9 a.m. in areas within 5 miles of the coast. Meteorologists said a very shallow marine layer would gradually move north and inland along the coast this morning.

Motorists on parts of Interstates 5 and 805 and state Route 163 were advised to use caution because visibility can drop suddenly to near zero. Drivers should slow down and use their low beams, according to the weather service.

The fog could also cause delays for early morning flights at Lindbergh Field and McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, NWS forecasters said.
