San Diego’s Parks and Recreation department will host a special water safety class for people recovering from brain injuries Friday.

The class, designed for those 16 and up who have experienced a brain attack — stroke, brain injury or illness — and caretakers, is scheduled at Swanson Memorial Pool in University City.

“Since its inception over 50 years ago, Therapeutic Recreation Services has provided a variety of sports, recreation, leisure and outreach services to community members with physical, mental and emotional disabilities,” said Kristi Fenick, district manager of Therapeutic Recreation Services. “Programs like the water safety class for individuals recovering from brain attacks are held to ensure the safety of these community members, while giving them the opportunity to enjoy the water this summer and beyond.”

According to the city, during the class, participants will learn how to properly use a life jacket, practice how to get to the side of the pool safely, practice floating skills and learn how to help someone in trouble.

People recovering from brain attacks often lose memory of many of the skills they learned prior to the injury and it’s particularly important for them to relearn water safety skills.

The class is free and interested participants can register on the Parks and Recreation Department’s online activity registration system at SDRecConnect.com, using code 113231.
