The Grossmont Union High School District Governing Board has named an in-house candidate as the finalist to become the district’s next superintendent.

Mike Fowler, who currently serves as the district’s assistant superintendent of educational services, has been tapped to succeed Superintendent Mary Beth Kastan, who is retiring.

Fowler has spent nearly 30 years in the district in a variety of positions, including principal and assistant principal at Granite Hills High School and assistant principal at El Captain High School. He started as a teacher of English, accounting, entrepreneurship and computer applications at Helix High School.

“To be selected as the superintendent finalist for a district whose families and staff I have come to know so well over 28 years is both a tremendous honor and a humbling responsibility,” Fowler said. “I’m grateful for the trust that our Governing Board has placed in me to lead our over 3,000 caring staff members, whose dedication to empowering each of our students to build the best future is unyielding.”

The board will consider Fowler’s appointment at its May 9 meeting, If approved, he will assume the superintendent role on July 1.

Board President Rob Shield described Fowler “as a deeply caring person” who stood out among the superintendent candidates for “his fierce and unwavering commitment to providing every student with a path to success is evident.”

“Mike Fowler’s proven track record of outstanding instructional leadership, both as principal of our largest high school and as assistant superintendent of educational services, made him the clear choice to lead our district forward as we work to set a new standard for high-quality educational programs,” Shield said.
