Transfer Nick Boyd, late of Florida Atlantic University, has signed a Grant-In-Aid, making him the newest member of the San Diego State men’s basketball team.
“Nick is everything you want in a player,” said head coach Brian Dutcher. “He prioritizes winning first and foremost. He is an elite point guard as both a scorer and playmaker. His ability to score at all three levels, three-point shot, midrange and at the rim make him very hard to defend.”
Aztec fans already know him well – he not only was part of the FAU team that SDSU denied at the buzzer in the 2023 Final Four, but also guarded Lamont Butler on his famous shot.
The seasoned post-season performer – FAU played in the NCAA Tournament again this year – arrives on the Mesa with two years of eligibility remaining.
In six NCAA Tournament games in the last two years, he averaged 7.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 16.7 minutes per game.
A native of Garnerville, N.Y., Boyd, who stands 6-3, has averaged 8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 21.3 minutes per game in his college career, including 51 starts in the last two seasons.
This past season he was limited to 27 appearances and 14 starts due to a leg injury, but posted his highest scoring average, 9.3 points. For the third consecutive season he shot at least 40% (80-of-200) from the field, made 42-of-123 three-pointers (34.1%) and hit a career-best 84.2% (48-of-57) from the line. He added 72 rebounds, 48 assists and 23 steals for a team that went 25-9 overall and 14-4 in the American Athletic Conference.
As a sophomore, in 2022-23, Boyd was a key component of the FAU Final Four team which set program records for victories (35) and points (3,035) while making just its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Boyd had career highs in multiple categories, including games (38), starts (37), minutes (898) and field goals (122).
He recorded the first double double of his career, 11 points and 10 rebounds, against South Alabama on Nov. 30, 2022, and also had his own golden Final Four moment. His layup with two seconds on the clock was the difference in a 66-65 win over No. 8-seed Memphis for FAU’s first win in the NCAA Tournament.
